PSB: Interview & Giveaway with Lori Handeland

I’m really happy to have fabulous author Lori Handeland by my side today! She made some room in her busy schedule to be with us today, so please let’s welcome her warmly! Don’t forget to check her latest release, Moon Cursed! And read until the end learn about our giveaway =)

How would you introduce the Nightcreature series to someone who hasn't discovered it yet?

The Nightcreature Novels are my paranormal romance series. They are set in various locations and deal with many ancient shapeshifter legends. I began the series with Ojibwe werewolves, like the weendigo--a shapeshifter with an insatiable hunger for human flesh.  (HUNTER'S MOON) The more it eats, the larger it becomes and the more it needs to eat. I moved on to New Orleans and had some fun with the voodoo kind, discovering the lougaro, a shape-shifting sorcerer that can become anything he desires.  (RISING MOON) Then I moved on to the Gypsies.  The Rom have a werewolf legend too called the strigoi de lup.  A Romanian sorcerer, usually a pretty young woman in a white dress, she is said to lead the wolves. In some legends she does this by becoming one beneath the light of the moon.  She protects her identity by killing anyone who sees her in that form and talks about it.  (HIDDEN MOON)

Along the way I got side-tracked a few times. For instance in MIDNIGHT MOON, I used the egbo, a Haitian leopard society, which was used to keep the slaves in line by actually turning into leopards on occasion.  And then there was THUNDER MOON, which told the tale of the Cherokeee Kalanu Ahyeli’-ski or Raven Mocker.  The Raven Mocker robs the dying of life. Flying through the night with arms outstretched trailing sparks, the raven mocker announces its approach with a horrible shriek.  The Raven Mocker eats the victim’s heart, stealing whatever days the person has left on the Earth.

When I returned to the Nightcreature Novels after a hiatus writing urban fantasy, I pulled an ancient legend out of my research hat. I'd always been interested in the Norse legend of the beserker, but I had never managed to fit it into a book until MARKED BY THE MOON.

Moon Cursed is the tenth book in the series, what can we expect in that one?

MOON CURSED explores the legend of the Loch Ness Monster. The heroine, Kristin Daniels, is the host of the television show Hoax Hunters. She’s traveled to the ends of the earth to explore—and expose—life’s most enduring myths. But now Kris is bound for Scotland, where she intends to get to the bottom of the Loch Ness Monster legend once and for all. But in the ruins of the lake’s Urquhart Castle she discovers a heavenly creature—a sleek, muscled man named Liam Grant, mysterious and secretive. Is Liam for real? Or has the spell of the moon touched them both?

When you first started writing, did you ever imagine you would be so successful?

I imagined quite a bit! LOL!

What the most challenging part for you, when writing a book?

For me, it depends on the book. For some the beginning is tough, others the end. At times the rewrites drive me nuts and at others the middle needs punching up.

If you could date one of your own characters, who would you pick and what would you do together?

Since danger follows my characters everywhere and I'm a great, big wimp, I don't think I'd want to date any of them. I'm no good at fighting werewolves and if I saw a shapeshifter I'd hide.

Which one of your characters you admire the most and why?

I admire every character the most while I'm writing them. While in a book, I'm totally captivated by that book and those characters. So right now my favorite characters are Mateo Mecate and Gina O'Neil from the next Nightcreature Novel, CRAVE THE MOON, available Jun 28.

Last a question I ask to all of my guests during the fest: What's your best Spring Break memory?

My favorite spring break memory is when we took our boys to Jamaica a few years ago. It was the last trip we made together as a family since my kids are grown up and off to college (yippee!). But
we had a fantastic time and whenever the boys mention places they'd love to return to, Jamaica tops the list.

Thank you so much Lori for taking the time to visit us!

Kristin Daniels is passionate in her pursuit of the truth. As the host of the television show Hoax Hunters, she's traveled to the ends of the earth to explore—and expose—life's most enduring myths. Her latest undertaking is no exception: Kris is bound for Scotland, where she intends to get to the bottom of the Loch Ness Monster legend once and for all. Instead, Kris encounters something far more mysterious... For in the ruins of the lake's Urquhart Castle lies a heavenly creature—a sleek, muscled man with a seductive brogue named Liam Grant. One look into his eyes and Kris is already in danger of falling in too deep. Is Liam for real? Or has the spell of the moon touched them both?

  27. I guess I would say My favs tend to be the big cats and dragons. I also want to say we have been fortunate to meet Ms. Handeland twice, and boy were we shocked last year to see her with the looong hair! She has become a favorite because she was so great answering my husband's questions about her books, the PNR classification and how much romance was in her books, and she actually remembered us or maybe it was really more my husband that she remembered, since men are few and far between at these conventions ;~)

  28. Big cats, wolves and dragons.
