“When I’m not writing” with Berinn Rae…and giveaway!

1-BerinnRae_headshot Today’s visit is from the lovely Berinn Rae, author of the Guardians of the Seven Seals series. The first book in the series, Knightfall, is available now as an eBook and Berinn has graciously offered up one (1) copy for a giveaway. But before we get to that, you have to hear what Berinn does in her spare time because it is – and she is! – super cool.

Without further ado, here’s Berinn!

When I’m not writing (which I do every chance I get because I LOVE it), I’m often at my day job where I sit in conference rooms during many long days of meetings. But I’d rather talk about the fun stuff I do when I’m not writing... flying vintage airplanes, trying to make a dent in my TBR (to-be-read) pile, and catering to my very spoiled sixty-pound lap dog named Annabelle.

I learned to fly later in life – after I met my husband to be exact. He was already a pilot, and I instantly became hooked. It wasn’t long before I was taking to the skies and loving every hour in the clouds (or feet above the trees). Many of my vacations involve a fly-in of some sort (a fly-in, like the world-famous Oshkosh Airventure is just that: aviation enthusiasts come from miles away to fly or talk about flying). But I would never leave home without my kindle library and a few paperbacks. Paranormal romance and SciFi/Fantasy are my faves. I’m wrapping up a Nalini Singh novel today.

I fly whenever I can. Sunset flights are beautiful in an open cockpit biplane (mine is a 1942 Stearman PT-17). Sometimes my husband will join me in formation flying, which is great for keeping skills current.

But it’s not always easy being a woman pilot. Did you know women make up less than 5% of all pilots? I’d like to see that number grow. A lot. Every year, I work with girl scout groups to help them add the aviation badge to their collection. Even if just one girl goes on to get her pilot’s license, that makes it all worthwhile. If you’ve always wanted to learn to fly and don’t know where to start, reach out to me. Trust me, it’s not as scary (or expensive) as you’d think, and it’s even more fun than you think. :)

Now onto the fur ball in my life. Annabelle is the most snuggly dog. Ever. Even though she’s a hunting breed, the only things that need to fear for their lives are bugs (and even they are pretty safe). She loves people and has designated herself as the official airport greeter. She never turns down the chance to fly. Or a walk. Or a treat. Well, come to think of it, she never turns down anything. That dog loves everyone and everything (except for those Japanese beetles that look like ladybugs; she thinks they taste gross).

Well, I guess that sums up what I do when I’m not writing. Oh, look, the sun just came out. I’m going flying. See you around!

Thank you, Berinn, for taking the time to share with us! My boyfriend is a pilot and he dreams of flying a biplane so I can only imagine how much fun you and your husband must have!

  1. Wow, am I the first one to leave a comment? o.o

I love the pictures. A frind of mine once tried to convince me to get into.. a 'thing'. (I won't call 'it' anything else, I was so freaking scared, I almost peed myself.. even though I didn't even agree to.. But just seeing it.. >_< : D)

Didn't know there were only 5 % female pilots. Is that an international number? :O

Thank you for the giveaway and making it international! : )

(Just noticed that tyngareviews almost has 2000 followers. Daaamn! Last time I visited the site via my webbrowser and not via Google Feedreader, it was.. 1800 or something.)

  2. @Patricia You got me all excited for a moment lol I thought I had reached the actual 2000 haha. Hopefully I will by new year =D

  3. @Patricia - Yes, the 5% of women pilots is an international number. We as ladies have got to change those kind of numbers!
@Tynga - Wow, only 11 to go to hit the big 2000. Sounds like a party!

Oh, I mentioned the giveaway is for an ebook, but I'll send a signed paperback instead if that's what the winner prefers (yes, open to international readers). Good luck everyone!

  5. It would be amazing to be able to fly. To see everything from way up high (I've never even been on a plane).

  6. Now that is a different hobby; mine is knitting or crocheting, not flying.

  7. Hi!
Yes I think I would like to be able to fly even if I'm a little scary of height! Thanks for the giveaway, the book sounds great!

  8. Noooo I don't want to fly,I feel sick on a small stepladder :)

  9. When I was in high school I wanted to go to the Air Force Academy and fly jets. The recruiter told me I was too short (5'2"). But I love being up in the air. I think it's a wonderful thing you do exposing young people to flight :).
I like the sounds of KNIGHTFALL and the cover is lovely.

  10. Yes! Just once for the experience. I'm recalling Sabrina, the Teenage Witch moments.

  11. If I hadn't such a fear of hights I would love to fly with you one day. The book blurb sounds very good, thanks for the chance to win it.

  12. 5% is all? Seems so small... I have always thought flying, skydiving, hang gliding all sound like fun. I have a husband who is afraid of heights though, so if I ever bring up doing one of those he gets all freaked out and reminds me that we have three young kids and he can't do it alone.
So I guess I have to live vicariousley through people like you, at least until our kids are out of high school. =)

Love the plot of your book Knightfall! Sounds like something I would enjoy reading. Glad you were featured here so I could hear about it and put it in my TBR list!

  13. I have thought about being able to fly both a plane and with non-mechanical means. Since I have a fear of flights, it wouldn't be very high up though.

  14. I love to fly... in a commercial airplane that is. I'm kinda claustrophobic so a smaller plane might give me problems :)

    Thanks for the great giveaway!

  15. I hope one day, luckily soon, I'll learned to fly an airplane. Eek, just by thinking about it, it just gives me a rush!
Oh, and my favorite animal to see in the zoo are the penguins... or alligators! lol

  16. I learned that I don't like flying in small planes, so no bush piloting for me. Did a tandem jump one birthday, that felt like flying, and it was a glorious experience.

  17. Sadly no, I've never wished I could fly. I have a healthy fear of flying. Can't stand flying commercial and you couldn't pay me enough to fly in a helicopter or puddle jumper.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  18. I think I would like to fly. I have never been on a commercial airplane although my Uncle has a small 2 seater that I have been up in and he even let me "fly". I was 16 then and thats the only time I have ever been in an airplane.

  19. I used to think it would be awesome to fly, but then I had a dream in which I could fly....and it was horrible. Pretty sure I would have fallen out of the sky if I hadn't woken up. Lol.

  20. I always thought it would be awesome to fly like Supergirl!

  21. When I was younger, I'd have loved to learn to fly, With age comes wisdom and the knowledge that my bones don't knit back quite like they use to so I'll just read about it and dream.

  22. Yes, I'd love to be able to fly and go places I could relax in. Yeah, it would be a great experience.

  23. This is both a yes and no for me I ve always wanted to fly but not in a plane lol I wishe I had the magical ability :)

  24. That's my constant wish for a superpower! I would LOVE to fly! I even wanted to become a pilot, but my family discouraged me saying how much mechanics I would have to learn. Dreams where I'm flying are the best!

Thank you for the post and the giveaway!

  25. Yes, I do!
But I dislike the idea of having wings :D I'd just like to fly as and when I want to mentally and without wings.
